Video Friday, The English Beat

It just seems like a good way to go out of employment with a little 2 Tone Ska.
And we're talking The Beat (or, in North America, The English Beat, since Paul Collins had a band in the U.S. called The Beat).
The Beat were formed in England in 1978, during a time of great social upheaval. The band's first single was a remake of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown."
They went on to record three albums, and a string of hit singles.
The two front men, Ranking Rodger and Dave Wakeling, went on to form General Public after The Beat's breakup in 1983.
The Beat, your Video Friday:

"Tears of a Clown"

"Too Nice to Talk to"

"Doors of Your Heart"

"Best Friend"

"Mirror in the Bathroom"

"I confess"

"Save It For Later"

...and bassist David Steele and guitarist Andy Cox went on to form Fine Young Cannibals.
LOVE the Beat! It's surprising how well they've aged, especially given the fact their songs were so political (Stand Down Margaret, etc). Their debut is simply a perfect album. All killer, no filler, just like Madness' debut and the Specials debut.
Best of luck to you in New Yawk, Thom.

Awesome, T! And I remember hearing a couple of these tunes in 'Grosse Point Blank', one of my favorite movies of all time! You have good way with music, Mister : )

OMG! I own "Special Beat Service" (vinyl) and one of my favorite songs of all time is "I Confess". I can't believe you put these here.

Now, I'll have to come back when I can turn up the volume here and listen to these. Thanks Thom!
