Wednesday's Three Word Wednesday

The words over at Three Word Wednesday are ambitious, incredible and ugly. Don’t read any Freud into this. These are the weird ideas that come to visit in the darkness…

Do-Over
There’s an old bassinet in the living room, a chipped white wicker job my sister used to rock her Chatty Cathy doll. A soft cooing is coming from it, but the clucks are in the rich baritone of my 72-year-old father’s voice.
I go take a look.
Swaddled in a velvety, light blue flannel sleeper with bears on it is an infant’s body – with my father’s weathered and full-grown head attached.
“What the hell?”
“Oh, hey, what do you think?” he says. “I know it’s an ambitious endeavor, but I’m starting over. Fresh and all.”
“Incredible,” I say. “What about mom?”
“Slowly warming to the idea,” he says. “Look, retirement has been ugly. Bridge with your mother’s moldy friends, eating dinner at 4 p.m. and CSI at 8? This is for the best, you see.”
Just then, dad lets loose with a tremendously wet and significant fart, and smiles a sly and contented smile.
“Little help here?” he says, tears welling in his eyes from the now uncomfortably warm load in his diaper.
“You really didn’t think this through fully, did you?”

I enjoyed this. Unusual without being bizarre. But, then, maybe bizarre was what you were going for. Sorry, if that's the case. You only achieved unusual. And interesting. But not bizarre.

I laughed, but this has a sort of wistful element to it, underneath the humor. If we could have do-overs and if our loved ones could return, would it be anything like what we expected? Almost certainly not. Whether for better or worse is something we can't know.
