People I know and love are in crisis. Over things they've never experienced before.
Unfortunately, I have.
Whether it's the loss of a job, divorce, ailing parent, cheating significant other - whatever - they all say they're lost and confused.
These are 30- and 40-somethings who all to a person said, "I didn't think this would ever happen to me."
Good people too. Hard-working.
Just unaccustomed to be in the vortex of the seriousness of life.
I don't judge, I don't consult. I've listened with an open ear.
Because, sometimes, that's all people need or want.
I do end the conversations with one statement. It's something I've come to believe in, in my trials and tribulations:
"You'll be OK."
Anyway, let's cut the heaviness with a little musical interlude I like to call Video Friday:
"Folsom Prison Blues," by a 5-year-old
"King of the Dogs," Iggy Pop
"Stay Positive," The Hold Steady
"In My Dreams, " Eels
"Float On," Modest Mouse
"Bad Luck," Social Distortion

I actually have a reference to modest mouse written on my first page of my current poetry notebook.
