The "All Music Guide" calls it "Arguably, the greatest rock single ever recorded."
The Only One's 1978 one-hit wonder, "Another Girl, Another Planet."
Never heard of it? Well, it has been covered by Greg Kihn, The Replacements (a live B-side to "Achin' To Be"), Blink-182 (it would be the last song Blink recorded as a group), The Mighty Lemon Drops, Belle & Sebastian and Babyshambles.
Another Girl, Another Planet
I always flirt with death
I could kill, but I don't care about it
I can face your threats
Stand up tall and scream and shout about it
I think I'm on another world with you
I'm on another planet with you
You always get under my skin
I don't find it irritating
You always play to win
I don't need rehabilitating
Another girl, another planet
Another girl, another planet
Space travels in my blood
And there ain't nothing I can do about it
Long journeys wear me out
Oh God we won't live without it
Another girl is loving you now
Another planet, forever holding you down
Another planet
The Only One's Peter Perrett wrote the song and the common interpretation is that it's about his struggles with drugs. The common misinterpretation is that Blink-182 changed "I could kill, but I don't care about it" to "I look ill, and don't care about it;" it was actually the Mats who changed that lyric and in the live 1991 version (from the bootleg "It Ain't Over Until the Fat Roadie Sings") Paul Westerberg changes both that line and the chorus, "another girl, another planet" to "another squirrel, another planet" (a fact I only picked up on like last year). Blink does change up the lyrics as well.
Anyway, I've actually variations of these three versions. And that's your trifecta for Video Friday:
And here's some fun versions from SeeqPod:
